Patna: Don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin's bail was on Friday challenged in the Supreme Court by the Bihar state government in which the former MP's party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is a partner.
Reacting to this development Shahabuddin said that he hasn't received any notice and isn't worried about it.
"Everyone in the country should respect the court order. I am no different from anyone," Shahabuddin added.
Earlier, RJD chief Lalu Prasad said, "I do not have any knowledge about this, the government is doing what it wants to. I can't comment."
Shahabuddin, who walked out of Bhagalpur jail last week, faces 58 cases including murder and kidnapping and has been convicted in at least eight.
His bail invited allegations that the Nitish government that had come to power on strength of its track record of restoring law and order in Bihar had gone soft on the Don from Siwan due to political compulsions.
Shahabuddin's release and the in-your-face reception he received outside the jail with several ministers in attendance had given a new lease of life to BJP’s poll time allegation that with
Lalu as partner, it was a matter of time that Bihar collapsed back to the days of 'Jungle Raj'.
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had on Thursday defended Shahabuddin saying that the controversy over the latter getting bail was a creation of Bharatiya Janata Party and media and only courts can decide such things.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Lalu said that media’s interest in Shahabuddin’s bail had surprised him. "Why is media so much interested in it and who is media to decide such things? Why is everyone questioning the court?" Lalu said.
He added that media had colluded with the BJP to target him.
