New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday held consultations with senior party leaders on the formation of a new government in Jharkhand. The Congress is in talks with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for an alliance for the next Lok Sabha polls and for the formation of a coalition government in the state.
AICC General Secretary in-charge of Jharkhand BK Hariprasad said that the talks are in its final stage. Jharkhand has been under the President's rule after the JMM-BJP alliance broke on January 18, 2013. The alliance broke-up after the JMM withdrew support from the BJP government.
According to sources Congress is working to woo political parties so as to garner support for the next Lok Sabha elections. Two important Congress's allies - DMK, TMC - have pulled out from the UPA and the party needs new partners to ensure victory in the 2014 elections.
If Janata Dal (United) supports Congress-JMM alliance in Jharkhand, it will also open the possibility of JDU-Congress alliance in the Centre. JDU has pulled out of the NDA after BJP anointed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the campaign committee chief of the party. The JMM-Congress alliance would also help UPA government to pass several contentious bills in Parliament.
