Sonia, Rahul Among MPs Asked to Push Modi's LPG Scheme in UP

Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2017, the LPG politics over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Ujjwala Yojana is gathering steam.

The Union Petroleum Ministry has written to all Uttar Pradesh MPs including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul to lead the campaign to provide LPG connections to BPL families in their respective constituencies under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

But the sub-text of the missive seems to be far wider. The twin districts of Raebareli and Sultanpur have less than 45% LPG coverage against a national average of 62%. Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by Rahul, till recently was part of Sultanpur district.

Amethi and Raebareli have been represented in the Lok Sabha by the top Congress leader for the last several years. BJP leader Varun Gandhi represents Sultanpur constituency.

Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had represented Amethi in the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th Lok Sabhas. His son Rahul won from Amethi in 2004, 2009 and 2014 while Sonia has been representing Raebareli since the 13th Lok Sabha.

So far, only MPs in Uttar Pradesh - which goes to polls in 2017 - have got the letters from the ministry.

Modi had inaugurated the Ujjwala Yojna in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district on May 1, 2016.

The aim of the scheme is to provide LPG connection to 5 crores BPL families over the next three years. A sum of Rs 2,000 crore has been earmarked by the Centre for the scheme in the financial year 2016-17.
