There should be a rational basis for implementation of OROP, can't afford if it becomes a trend: Arun Jaitley
"I want to appeal to everybody that there should be a reasonable and rational basis for this implementation," said the Union Finance Minister.

With more defence veterans joining the fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that there is "consensus on OROP (One Rank One Pension issue) for servicemen who retire early."

"On this issue there is a common consensus in the whole country that the servicemen who retire at an early age, there should be special consideration for them," said Jaitley.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, the minister reiterated that the government was "committed to implement OROP".

"We are committed to implementing OROP. We are absolutely sure that it will be implemented. I want to appeal to everybody that there should be a reasonable and rational basis for this implementation," he said.

"There shouldn’t be a trend where the coming generation would make demand like this, then it would become unaffordable for the government," Jaitley added.

In the wake of the recent agitation on the issue of reservation, the finance minister said that the country was not ready to end reservation system.
