New Delhi: A day after the Centre told the Supreme Court that CVC P J Thomas was an officer of unimpeachable integrity, the BJP attacked the government over its affidavit.
BJp president Nitin Gadkari hit out at the government for ignoring the objections raised by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj.
"Thomas shouldn't have been appointed for a post as sensitive as CVC. If they didn't want to take an advise then why did they keep a leader of the Opposition in the committee? Sushma Swaraj always advised against Thomas. CVC should be an impartial and fair person," said Gadkari.
Meanwhile, Sushma Swaraj also reacted to the government affidavit defending Thomas.
"The government affidavit on CVC is on expected lines. This is in conformity, with the Congress tradition of denigrating institutions," she wrote on Twitter.
Swaraj had earlier recommended that appointing P J Thomas for the post of CVC would not be acceptable.
CVC Thomas 'fully eligible' for post: Centre
The Centre on Monday strongly defended the appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner PJ Thomas.
The Centre filed an affidavit in Supreme Court on CVC Thomas' appointment.
Stating that Thomas is an "outstanding officer" with "impeccable integrity", Centre said that impeccable integrity is a desirable criteria and not an eligibility norm and that impeccable integrity cannot be a matter of judicial scrutiny. The Centre also said there was no need for "consensus" of the three-member high powered committee on CVC's appointment.
Disagreeing with the court's questioning of Thomas's appointment, the government contended," It is well settled that a question of suitability should be left to the wisdom of the appointing authority. Suitability cannot be questioned by the court and the suitability should be left to the wisdom of the appointing authority."
