Hooghly: Trinamool Congress candidate and former IPS officer Rachpal Singh on Thursday claimed that he and his supporters were assaulted by CPM workers while he was campaigning at Piyasara in Hooghly district.
Singh, who is pitted against West Bengal Fire Services Minister and Marxist Forward Bloc candidate Pratim Chatterjee in the Tarakeswar assembly seat, lodged a complaint with Tarakeswar police station that he was assaulted by CPM workers led by party leader Mohar Mullick at Piyasara, about 10 km from Tarakeswar and 80 km from Kolkata.
"I had gone to Piyasara for campaigning. Suddenly some CPM workers led by Mohar Mullick attacked me and my party supporters. I sustained injuries on the head, arms and leg while six of my supporters were also injured," he said.
Singh and his supporters sat on a dharna at Piyasara demanding immediate arrest of Mullick and others responsible for the attack on him and his supporters.
Singh is among the five former IPS officers fielded by the Trinamool Congress in the coming assembly elections. Superintendent of Police of Hooghly Tanmay Raychowdhury said Additional Superintendent of Police A Biswas has been sent to the area to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, CPM denied Singh's charge that he was assaulted by its workers and instead claimed that one of their party offices was damaged by Trinamool Congress supporters and their workers had gone to meet Singh to complain about it.
Elections to the Tarakeswar assembly seat would be held on May 3 during the fourth-phase of the six-phase poll.
