State BJP president Vijay Rupani on Friday promised to make Gujarat the role model of India post his appointment as the next chief minister of the state following Anandiben Patel's resignation earlier this week.
Senior state cabinet minister Nitin Patel who was the front runner for the CM's chair till the last moment was appointed as the deputy CM.
"The responsibility I have been handed is great and we (Nitin Patel and himself) are thankful for this," Rupani said during a press conference led by Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
"I and Nitin will work to the best of our ability as the task has been entrusted to us. We thank everyone for giving us such a big opportunity. We will put in all the efforts to make Gujarat the role model of India, Rupani added.
Quizzed about the process of choosing Rupani, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said it was a unanimous decision.
"We discussed it with everyone including the Prime Minster and finally the decision was made. Discussions were ongoing for the past few days. 'Sabka saath Sabka Vikas' has been the practise of the BJP. Under the leadership of Vijay Rupani and Nitin Patel we will take everyone along," Gadkari said.
Gadkari told reporters that more than ten BJP ministers supported Vijay Rupani's candidature for the top post and even backed Nitin Patel as the deputy CM.
