Patna: Congress, which is supporting Jitan Ram Manjhi government in Bihar, on Monday said that it would not be a "mute spectator" on incidents like stampede that took 33 lives and left 29 injured and sought stringent punishment against officials found guilty in the probe report.
"Human lives are precious. Government shall initiate stringent punishment against officials after probe report," state Congress President Ashok Chaudhary said in a statement.
"Officials did not show sensitivity which resulted in stampede... Congress will not be a mute spectator to such incidents," the BPCC chief said. Congress is supporting Jitan Ram Manjhi government from outside. The party was also a partner in the grand alliance with JD(U) and RJD that swept recent bypoll in the state on 10 seats.
"Such incidents are happening regularly in the last two years and people are playing with lives of innocent by spreading rumours triggering ugly event like the recent stampede in Patna," he added.
Chaudhary visited families of several stampede victims during the day to be with them and convey condolences of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the statement said.
