Tamil filmmaker Ponram directed Sivakarthikeyan in the romantic comedy Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam in 2013. It proved to be a breakthrough film for both. The movie was successful and helped Sivakarthikeyan secure his position as an A grade mass hero. While the movie provided a boost to Sivakathikeyan’s career, the same cannot be said about Ponram. After two more moderately successful collaborations with Sivakarthikeyan in Seemaraja and Rajinimurugan, he made box office flops like DSP and MGR Magan and soon faded into obscurity. He has not made a movie ever since the failure of DSP, but it appears that he is aiming for a big comeback. It appears that he will be directing the next film of late actor Vijayakanth’s son Shanmuga Pandian.
Shanmuga Pandian has been trying hard to carve out a niche for himself in the industry. He made his debut as a hero with the movie Sagaptham, released in 2015. After that, he acted in the film Madurai Veeran; but both the films failed to propel his career forward. Thamizhan Endru Sol was another project he was working on and his father Vijaykanth was also making a comeback with this film. Owing to Vijaykanth’s ill health and subsequent demise last year, the fate of the movie remains unknown, as of yet.
Another film of Shanmuga titled Padai Thalaivan also got delayed due to Vijaykanth’s demise. There was no information about the film for almost a year after its filming started; it was then reported that the film may include Raghava Lawrence in a supporting role, although it is not confirmed yet.
In midst of this, reports have surfaced that Ponram is going to direct Shanmuga next after Padai Thalaivan. He is reportedly in talks with the actor about the same. Considering that both of them are going through a rough patch in their respective careers, there is a lot the both have to bet on from this upcoming yet untitled film.
