Kamal Haasan is known to be one of the most versatile artists in Indian cinema. Over the years, he has taken roles, as diverse as his on-screen characters. He has been an actor, a playback singer, a director and a screenwriter. If we talk about Kamal Haasan’s screenwriting skills, successful films like Anbe Sivam, Virumandi, Panchatantram and Dasavatharam speak volumes. His intricate knowledge of how to put forth a narrative on paper and transform it on celluloid has earned him many successful films. According to latest reports, Kamal Haasan is going to take on the screenwriter’s role once again for the highly publicised Ilaiyaraaja biopic.
Earlier reports suggested that the life story of legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja would be adapted into a film, with Dhanush in the lead role. The project was officially announced yesterday, and an opening ceremony took place as well. Notable figures such as Ilayaraja, Kamal Haasan, Dhanush, Bharathiraja, Santhanabharathi, and Arun Matheswaran (director of the film), were among those who participated in the ceremony.
It was in the ceremony that Kamal Haasan was declared to be the screenwriter of the biopic. Director Arun Matheswaran will be treading into new ground with the film since he is most known for directing all and out action films like Rocky, Saani Kaayidham and Captain Miller.
During the launch event for Ilaiyaraaja’s biopic, Kamal Haasan expressed that encapsulating Ilayaraja’s life into a single film might be insufficient, suggesting that it would require at least four films to fully do justice to his story. This statement raises questions about the screenplay approach and whether the biopic will be a single comprehensive film or if it will be divided into multiple parts to cover different aspects of the musician’s life in greater detail. Kamal Haasan has been known to be a close aide of the music maestro for years and it will be interesting to see how he shapes up his life story in the upcoming project.
Kamal Haasan has a number of projects as an actor in the pipeline including Indian 2, Kalki 2898 AD and Thug Life.
