Can Windows 11 Recall AI Feature Be Uninstalled? Here’s What Microsoft Says
Windows Recall feature captures all your activities and saves them in a folder on the device but the tool will be optional once it rolls out next month.

Microsoft is not getting rid of its controversial Recall AI feature anytime soon, and turns out, Windows 11 users might not get that option either. Reports suggest Recall AI will not be uninstallable and the recent sightings of that option was merely a bug, as the company has claimed. One tipster spotted this change as they were able to uninstall the Recall feature which is yet to release publicly but the Insider version of Windows 11 is offering it for further tests.

The post says they found the Recall feature in the Turn Windows features on or off section in settings, which was later called as a bug by Microsoft in this report. Interestingly, the company didn’t say if the Recall feature will be removable once the public version rolls out but it was quoted saying that the uninstall bug will be fixed in an upcoming update.

Windows Recall AI – Not The Brightest Start

Recall was introduced at the Build conference by Microsoft earlier this year. The feature on the outset looked promising as it could track your activities and keep the data on-device. However, security researchers discovered that the data screened by Recall were not encrypted which could make it easy for hackers to access the private data without putting a lot of effort.

The details about the security issue with Recall were shared by Kevin Beaumount, who is a security researcher. He pointed out that the data accessed through Recall and stored on the Windows 11 PC is readable when the person signs into their Microsoft account. Microsoft feels that AI can optimise search on PCs with Recall but its compromises seem bigger than the convenience on offer.

The decision to recall the AI feature made it evident that Microsoft was worried about the vulnerabilities. Microsoft is making sure that Recall is not turned on by default, and the data is secure behind encryption. We’ll be getting more details on the new look Recall when it could be offered to Windows 11 users in October going by multiple reports.
