Microsoft has started testing its new Chromium-based Edge browser on the company’s Xbox consoles. This means that Xbox testers in the Alpha Skip-Ahead group can now access the new Microsoft web browser on their Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X console. The browser is currently only operated via the Xbox controller as full mouse and keyboard support is still missing from the early version. According to reports, this is the initial test version of the Chromium-based Edge, and hence, is a little buggy.
This comes as a welcome step from Microsoft as it will make life easier for those who want to access website directly from their controller. Edge is also now providing access to Google Stadia cloud gaming service, courtesy of again the Chromium support. The inclusion of the new Edge browser on Xbox consoles will also improve compatibility with browser-based games and services like Skype or Discord through the web.
According to a report in The Verge, the early test version of Chromium-based Edge appears to include the same sync engine as the normal Edge, but comes with support for extensions, vertical tabs, Collections, and more Edge desktop features. It is not known as to when Edge will arrive on all Xbox consoles, but given that the testing has already began, it will arrive on all Xbox consoles soon.
Microsoft will end support for the existing legacy version of Microsoft Edge on Windows desktops tomorrow.
