New Delhi: Use of mobile phones while crossing roads can be lethal. To thwart accidents as a result of absentmindedness, the New South Wales state government in Australia has come up with an unusual solution - ground traffic lights.
The six month trial for ground level traffic lights is expected to begin from December in Sydney at a cost of A$250,000.
A report on Mashable notes that the sites for the new under-foot traffic lights haven't been announced but is likely to be installed in five places in Sydney's central business district.
The lights will serve as an additional warning to pedestrians engrossed in their mobile phones on top of existing lights and signals.
A similar initiative was rolled out in Germany in April to help stop people from walking on train tracks while operating their mobile devices.
