Threads, the micro-blogging platform owned by Meta, is developing a feature similar to its competitor X (formerly known as Twitter). Instagram’s Threads is adding a new hashtags feature to its platform, and has started testing the feature with select users.
Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder and CEO of Meta, announced that Threads will soon undergo testing for a feature allowing users to tag topics. This will enable the categorization of posts based on interests or themes.
“Testing a way to categorise your posts with a tag. Starting in Australia with more countries coming soon,” he shared.
Threads users will use the “#” symbol to create tags, which will be displayed as clickable blue links. Following the initial testing in Australia, more countries will have the opportunity to test tags in the near future.
When composing a post, suggested tags will appear as you type, assisting in autocomplete. Users can either select from the suggested tags or create a new one. Once the tag is chosen and the post is published, anyone can click on the tag to explore other related posts on the same topic.
Meta has been working hard to add more features, and it’s slowly becoming a better rival to X. However, it still doesn’t have some core features, like the ability to DM anyone directly. That’s because Meta wasn’t planning to add DMs to it. But that could change soon, as Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri has revealed new details about the same.
Mosseri took to Threads to reply to The Platformer News’ Casey Newton. Mosseri, replying to Newton’s post, said that Meta could integrate Instagram’s inbox into the Threads app. This, of course, would enable direct messaging on it. However, he says there’s still a lot to do.
The company has also launched the ability to DM an Instagram contact directly from Threads without switching the app, but Mosseri believes that the platform “still needs to make that easier, improve the receiving experience, and work through a more comprehensive set of messaging controls.”
