The 43-year-old is the oldest man in history to become the world no. 1 tennis player and he thanked his team for sticking through the tough moments.
“First of all (thankful to)my team – they have been through really tough moments. The career high was back in 2013. You’ve got keep going. Thank you everyone. And most importantly my partner Matt. It’s always going to be a fantastic memory,” Bopanna said.
Bopanna said it’s every player’s dream to be at the top of the rankings and consistency over the past year has helped him climb up to the summit.
“I think for every player out there, it is a dream,” Bopanna said. “It was my dream, and more so when you’re playing the sport for couple of decades. Then now at this juncture for me to get to World No. 1, I think my perseverance to the sport, to stay in it and to keep fighting and to keep working hard, and have such a great partner by my side — I think the consistent year we had last year is why… This helped me get to this stage.”
