A mother in Toronto faced online criticism for giving birth at the age of 50. However, she feels ‘wiser’ and ‘more immersed’ in her son’s life than when she gave birth as a teen.
Tatiana Kaplan, who is 54 years old, wanted to have a family with her partner, Kenan Kaplan, aged 52, who works in IT. They started trying to have a baby only a month after meeting.
Following several attempts for three years without any results, Tatiana and Kenan tried IVF. Despite spending CAD 100,000 (approximately Rs 61 lakh) none of the attempts worked.
Tatiana and Kenan took a trip around Europe. When they came back, Tatiana noticed her period was late. She found out she was pregnant without any medical help after trying for 11 years.
While pregnant, Tatiana stayed active by walking up to 6 kilometres daily. She had a caesarean section to give birth to her son, Mark Kaplan, who is now four years old. Tatiana, a mother of two, thinks she has become wiser over time. This helps her spend more time with her son.
Tatiana, a stay-at-home mother from Toronto, Canada, aims to encourage others who aspire to become mothers later in life. Despite criticism from some who deem late motherhood as “shameful,” Tatiana seeks to instil hope. She expressed, “I believe I’ve demonstrated that age shouldn’t limit what you can achieve.”
“I think that’s why I don’t feel like I’m in my 50s. Instead, I’ve become a mother again.
“I wanted to show women that staying healthy and fit in their 50s, instead of declining early, is possible and important.
When Tatiana was 19, she became a mom to her daughter, Katerina. Sadly, her dad passed away when she was only four.
After spending some time single, Tatiana met Kenan in February 2007. They didn’t wait long before deciding to try for a baby together.
In October 2010, the couple opted for IVF. They attempted it seven times, shelling out CAD 100,000 (approx. 61 lakh) on travel, hotels, medicine, and procedures. Tatiana revealed, “I gave it another shot at 47. I began to think perhaps it was time to lose hope.”
Tatiana had a c-section because her baby was in a breech position. Her son was born on September 18, 2019, at North York General Hospital in Toronto. He weighed 6 pounds and 6 ounces.
