Who isn’t familiar with Latin America’s football craze? They put everything aside to watch football on TV during events like the World Cup and Copa America. A video from Chile, a country in Latin America, demonstrates the extreme passion these football matches inspire, even if it costs someone’s life (literally). In an increasingly popular video, mourners can be seen sitting close to an open coffin at a wake, watching a live football game. Additionally, the casket is decked with football players’ jerseys.
Seated next to the coffin of a deceased member, the family is seen watching a Copa America match between Chile and Peru on a large screen projector. They are watching the game while seated in front, behind and on each side of the casket holding the body.
“Uncle Fena, thank you for all the joyous moments you gave us,” read a placard in the prayer room next to the coffin. “We will always remember you and your Condorian family.”
The match resulted in a dismal 0-0 stalemate, disappointing the fervent friends and family.
Chile ????????: During a funeral that happened at the same time as a Chile vs. Peru Copa America match, the family paused the service to watch the game on a big screen in the prayer room. Meanwhile, at the 2024 Copa America, Chile secured third place in the Group A. Previously, Chile were not eliminated earlier than the quarter-finals since 2004. Chile’s football federation (FFC) urged South American soccer’s regulatory body (CONMEBOL) to take action against referee Wilmar Roldan.
According to the FCC, Colombian referee Roldan made “gross errors” during the game against the Canadians and lacked impartiality in his matches, reported Reuters. An FCC plea to suspend the referee following that match was denied by CONMEBOL. The Copa America is the premier men’s quadrennial football competition played by South American national teams.
