Gujarat couple, who donated Rs 200 crores to live a life of a monk, showers money and clothes from chariot.

A couple from Gujarat, who generously gave away almost Rs. 200 crore to lead a simple life as monks, recently took part in a procession to distribute all their possessions and wealth. Bhavesh Bhandari, a construction businessman, and his wife made this significant donation in February, embracing the path of Jain ascetics known as “Sayyam Jeevan”. It’s been reported that later this month, they’ll formally announce their decision to pursue a renounced life.

The viral video making rounds on the internet captured the couple standing proudly atop a lavishly decorated truck, resembling a grand chariot. As the procession wound its way through Himmatnagar, they joyfully tossed clothes and showered currency notes on the gathered crowd. Not stopping there, along the four-kilometre journey, they generously distributed their mobile phones and air conditioners to those in need.

For those unfamiliar with the tradition, during such processions, known as “baraat,” those aspiring for monkhood dress elaborately, resembling brides and grooms, adorned in gold jewellery, accompanied by lively music and dancers.

Although the couple already donated their belongings in February, they plan to cut all ties with their family on April 22 to embark on a barefoot journey across India, relying solely on alms. Their possessions will be limited to a white garment, a bowl for alms, and a broom.

Who is Bhavesh Bhandari?

Hailing from a prosperous family in Sabarkantha, Bhavesh Bhandari enjoyed a comfortable upbringing. He engaged in construction and conducted business in both Ahmedabad and Sabarkantha. The family has a rich history of involvement with members of the Jain community, including monks and followers.

In following the footsteps of their 19-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son, who embraced monkhood after similar rituals in 2022, the couple is setting a remarkable example. In 2023, a wealthy diamond merchant and his wife also relinquished their material possessions and embraced monkhood, following in the footsteps of their son who did the same five years prior.
