In civil service exam preparation, where the primary focus is often around extensive topic coverage and mastering the syllabus, 12th Fail fame and IAS Guru Dr Vikas Divyakirti offers a unique perspective. As the founder and managing director of Drishti IAS, a UPSC coaching institute, Vikas Divyakriti consistently underscores the significance of maintaining a balanced life. Recently, IAS officer Awanish Sharan shared a video featuring Divyakriti offering advice that encourages students to venture into the world, emphasising the value of learning from their surroundings rather than solely relying on textbook knowledge.

In the clip, Divyakriti said, “Duniya ko kitabon se zyada aankhon se seekhna hai. Sikhane me badi bhumika aas pass ke mahaul ka hai. Study room me bandh hoke nahi rehna hai, samaj mai bhi rehna hai kyuki jitna aap sadak pe seekhenge utna kitab nahi sikhayeg. Jitna metro mai, beedh mai, bus mai, paseene ki durghand mai reh kar thoda sekehgay utna kitabein nahi sikhayegi. (To know about the world, you should learn more from your eyes than from the books. The surrounding environment plays a big role in teaching. You don’t have to stay confined in the study room, you also have to go out in society because books can’t teach you what you learn on the streets, in a metro, or the bus.)”
He added, “Har mahaul mai seekhain aur apna bachpan bana ke rakehin. Hassi-majak bana rahein. Jeevan mai safal hona hai achhi baat hai par uska dabau itna na ho ki safalta zindagi se badi ho jaye. Safalta choti cheez hai, zindagi badi cheez hai. Aur sabse badi baat hai ki sahaj banke rehna hai. Mahan nahi, sahaj insaan banna hai. Agar aap sahaj insaan ban ke zindagi jee lete ho toh usse achhi zindagi koi nahi hai. (Learn from every atmosphere and situation. Be sure to retain your childlike curiosity. It is a good thing to be successful in life but the pressure should not be so much that success becomes bigger than life. Success is a small thing, life is a big thing. The important thing is to value simplicity. Aspire to be a modest person, not a great person. If you live like a humble person then there is no better life than that.)”
Divyakriti’s video has thousands of likes. Commenting on it, an X user wrote, “These things need to be taught to today’s and upcoming parents.” Another person wrote, “If you are ready to learn in life… there are people to teach you…”
Recently, Divyakirti appeared as himself in ’12th Fail’, a biographical drama film made on the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme hardships and poverty to become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
