A woman from Hyderabad had an unpleasant experience after she bought a pastry from a popular bakery but found it “spoiled”. While sharing an incriminating photo that shows the cream infected with what appears to be “mould or fungus”, Preeti Biswas wrote that the “5th Avenue Bakers” in Sainikpuri has made her question the food safety norms of the city. Biswas said the bakery has served customers for the past 30+ years. She tagged the official X account of the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana in her post.
This post soon got over 2 lakh views since it was shared on May 25. As of 8.20 pm on May 26, Biswas said that despite the “strong support and engagement, this post hasn’t led to any action” from Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana and Assistant Food Controller of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
Apart from strong support and engagement, this post hasn't led to any action from @cfs_telangana @AFCGHMC. This highlights the urgent need for a platform where consumers can directly flag food safety issues with inspectors. An X user suggested, “Preeti, please get the food samples tested in the State Food Laboratory in Nacharam. Once you have the report ready.. please file a case against them in the District Consumer Forum and sue them. Don’t forget to keep the bill copy. Enough of these eateries taking public health for granted.”

An X user commented, “If you are in India and go to any regular restaurants, get fresh idli, dosa, chapati etc. That is the only thing you can trust. I won’t touch even their stale chutneys. For all other food, you have to go to very upscale restaurants that may charge exorbitant prices for the ambience but also maintain some level of quality. For all others you are risking your health.”

Another person wrote, “Never tried the bakery but I was close to the area. Many hotels in asrao nagar, kapra sell stale products. But still people have very few options because of the cost. Even in millet express they are also selling idlis which are cold and stale.”

Following this post, many individuals advocated for a boycott of establishments that neglect food safety regulations and jeopardize people’s lives for the sake of profit. It will be intriguing to observe whether the authorities take note of the post and initiate an investigation into the matter.
