Kolkata Couple Gets Married In Hospital After Bride Falls Sick Before Wedding
Sucharita Patra and Amit Mukherjee got married in a hospital ward in Durgapur, West Bengal.

In a recent display of love that transcends all boundaries, a touching story has captured the hearts of many. Just moments before their much-awaited wedding ceremony, the bride fell unexpectedly ill. While such circumstances often lead to cancellations, what unfolded was nothing short of remarkable. Instead of postponing, the couple decided to tie the knot in the hospital ward.

Amidst unforeseen circumstances, a young bride, diagnosed with viral hepatitis just two days before her scheduled wedding, found herself hospitalized with stomach pain. Undeterred by the setback, the couple decided to exchange vows within the hospital ward in Durgapur, West Bengal on Saturday night. With the groom travelling from Delhi, they exchanged garlands and performed the traditional rituals, surrounded by family members, the hospital’s medical staff, nurses, and fellow patients.

Sucharita Patra, a microbiologist employed in Delhi, had long awaited her special day with Noida-based engineer Amit Mukherjee. Despite the unexpected turn of events, their families were resolute not to let the date slip by, especially considering the groom and his relatives had already made their way to Durgapur.

According to the Times Of India, the family had initially sought permission from the hospital authorities for Sucharita to be taken out in an ambulance for just an hour to conduct the rituals. However, the authorities at Life Care Hospital in Durgapur took a compassionate step by granting special permission from the board of directors, allowing the wedding to take place inside the hospital ward.

Expressing their gratitude, Sucharita’s father, Subrata Kumar Patra, a mechanical engineer at Bilaspur said, “We are extremely thankful to the hospital authorities for allowing the wedding to happen inside the hospital. This is not something that happens usually but they went against their norms and allowed us to conduct the rituals inside the ward.”

Sucharita and Amit, who met at work in Delhi, have been together for years. After the wedding rituals, Amit’s family left for Haryana, while Amit stayed back. They’ll return home together to Noida once Sucharita is discharged in 4-5 days. The marriage registration will happen later, the father told Times Of India.

According to the relatives, Sucharita complained of stomach pain while preparing for the wedding at home on Thursday. She was diagnosed with viral hepatitis and hospitalized.

“It was later diagnosed as viral hepatitis by the doctors the following day. Though not chronic, her condition required hospitalization,” said one family member.

Hospital CEO Satadal Dutta graciously permitted the couple to get married in the ward with 10 family members and the priest present.
