A Bengaluru woman, wanting to move out of her current flat, made dating app profiles of her room to find a match. Karuna Tata named her room ‘Kholi number 420’, after a famous song from the 1977 film Amar Akbar Antony, and made a profile for the room on Hinge and Tinder. Her room is a part of a 3BHK apartment in Bengaluru’s Singasandra. While speaking to Moneycontrol, Tata said that she and her flatmates have a joint contract with the flat owner. She wants to move out of the flat, but she will only get her share of the deposit, which amounts to Rs 36,000 if she finds a person who rents the room after her.
Tata found a few ‘potential replacements’ but her flatmates were not convinced they were a good fit. After exhausting her search on Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram, Tata advertised her room on dating apps, hoping someone would be interested in renting it.
Is this a startup idea or a peak Bengaluru moment in desparate times? Anyways meet kholi number 420 who's on tinder to get matched with potential flatmates to replace me. @Tinder_India please make this happen. pic.twitter.com/1vBwdU9Zhb— Karuna Tata (@starlightknown) December 21, 2023
Her room’s Tinder bio mentions the quirky details of the room and the flat. The bio says, “I’m the queen of aesthetics, just add fairy lights hehe. I’m part of a group called 3BHK, jaha bhi jau sath me just like how girls go to washroom together, stay together. Mera asli naam mujhe nahi pata. Sab humko PK PK bulawat hai (sorry building 104). Mai rehti hu Singasandra me, Ha vahi Bangalore ki traffic ki gali ke pass jaha supermarkets, pharmacies nazdeek hai. I like to help a lot of people na islye. Ab mai tehri modern toh no restrictions on veg/non veg and we all like to bring friends :P.”
Similarly, the room’s Hinge profile also lists several benefits of the room through the app’s prompts. In response to the prompt “A life goal of mine,” the profile read, “To find a new flatmate I’m a very loving room. I don’t know why my old owner is leaving me. I get a lot of sunlight too who wouldn’t want to live in a room like me.”
It's @Tinder_India vs @hinge now. Getting matches and appreciations for this idea is amazing though ???????? https://t.co/o0VyOfaDlk pic.twitter.com/VADFEV88eJ— Karuna Tata (@starlightknown) December 23, 2023
Tata’s creative efforts to get a replacement renter have gone viral on X. Commenting on her room’s Tinder profile, an X user wrote, “This lowkey cracked me up.” Another person shared, “The other day, My friend screen recorded & sent me the video of a girl’s profile who was legit on Bumble only to get help on her project & used all her prompts to explain her project and the help she needs.”
