Reddit User Loses Job For 'Saving A Life'; Know What Happened
A Reddit user shared how they got fired for being late to the office because they had to give CPR to someone on their way to work.

Losing a job, especially when it serves as a vital financial support system, can be an unsettling and distressing ordeal. The anxiety amplifies when termination happens suddenly and without warning. Recently, a Reddit user shared a similar incident, claiming to have been dismissed by their employer for arriving late due to an unforeseen event. The employee explained that on their way to work, they saw someone collapsing on the train. Left with no choice, the Redditor decided to prioritise saving the man’s life before reaching office. In an act of courtesy, the user informed their office superiors about the delay and anticipated a positive response. However, what unfolded next was truly unexpected.

The user explained, “This morning I was on my way to work when someone in the opposite side of my train carriage had pretty much dropped dead. Even though I was in my work uniform, I didn’t mind getting it dirty if it means I can help someone. By the time the guy was breathing again, the paramedics and police had arrived. The police wanted me to give a statement, so I did. Due to the fact there was now a ‘biohazard’ on the train, they cancelled the service, forcing me to wait an extra hour for a train. I gave the courtesy of letting my work know I’d be about an hour and a half late to work because of this.”

Upon reaching the workplace, the Reddit user was summoned for a meeting with their boss and HR. The user presented evidence, such as details of the police officer to whom he had provided a statement and screenshots of the incident featured on the news website. Despite offering substantial information, they faced immediate termination. The reason provided for the firing was unexpectedly surprising: “Apparently, being in uniform while giving CPR causes a ‘negative image’ for the company I work for.”

The Reddit post gained significant traction and garnered over 7000 upvotes. Social media users supported the individual, while others suggested that the person make the story public, recommending an approach to newspapers for wider coverage.

A user suggested, “Go to the local Television Station of Newspaper, Great story, for you, bad for your employer.”

Another shared, “I’d figure out a way to make this go public, as it could make the company look really bad. HR is creating a very apathetic work environment if they’re firing you over saving a life.”

An individual asked, “Do you really want to work for a company that isn’t happy that one of their employees took time out of his work day to save a random strangers life?”

“Thank you for caring about another human being,” a comment read.

One more wrote, “This is the kinda thing people start GoFundMe pages for. Hopefully someone repays your kind deed with another. Good on you for saving a life. Poo on your employer for canning you.”

Following the viral response to the post, the user provided an update, mentioning that they had taken the advice of Reddit users and reached out to local news stations. Two stations expressed interest, while one even conducted a phone interview.
