A techie shared how he helped his friend land a job at Dell and it has prompted numerous people to share their own hiring stories.

Job references can open doors, but they only take you so far if you lack the skills required for the role. While a strong reference might help you land an interview, your actual skills and qualifications are ultimately what will determine whether you get the job. And sometimes, even after having a job reference, you have to go through several rounds of interviews. However, for one individual it was just being “cool” and he “liked to party” to get a job at Dell. Yes, you read it right! One techie shared this crazy story of getting his friend hired at his company almost two decades ago and it has elicited numerous responses from people.

“Tech hiring in the 2000s was crazy,” Jack Forge wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

He then revealed how he helped his friend land a job at Dell: “[Told] my manager that he was cool and liked to party.”

To his surprise, the next thing his manager said was to ask for his friend’s CV. “Guy was hired and in a desk within 3 days,” he added.

Another shared that he got hired at a media company: “LOL yeah I remember putting my resume on MonsterBoard in 2000 after having been in the Dominican Republic for over a year. I submitted it, closed up, walked downstairs to have tea with my gf and my mom and the phone rang. I got invited for an interview at Endemol (the biggest media company in Holland at that time) and was hired on the spot. LMFAO. Worked there for 5 years doing all kinds of awesome stuff. Good times!”

“I think a lot of people got hired this way across many industries,” expressed a third.

A fourth commented, “Now you need 15 years of experience with HTMX for a level 1 tech support role.”

“My first job in 2001 as a designer/developer I showed up for an interview and I was the only person to show up. Got hired on the spot,” shared a fifth.
