When defining generosity, we usually consider the impact: the greater the number of lives saved by an action, the more generous it is. Can you, however, be generous when you tend to have less, even for yourself? While there is theoretical debate on the matter, some adhere to the golden rule, which states that saving one life is equivalent to saving all of mankind. A video has gone viral on social media in which a woman rewrites the norms of compassion in a consumer-driven world, unknowingly shifting our perspective.
The video shows an inspiring incident of a street vendor’s extraordinary act of kindness. Despite facing a shortage of food at her stall, this vendor exemplified immense generosity when a customer, who happened to be a vlogger, approached her with a request to purchase food worth Rs 2,000. Upon learning that she did not have enough food to fulfil his request, the vendor, instead of turning him away, assured him that he would not leave hungry. Refusing the payment upfront, she insisted on serving him a meal first and accepting the money later on.
In a humble response, she regretfully admitted that she did not have ample food left that day, saying, “Mere paas khana nahi bachaa aaj. Sorry, bhai (I don’t have enough food left today. Sorry, brother).”
Even with the food shortage, she remained steadfast in her commitment to providing him with a meal, refusing to let him leave on an empty stomach.
With sincerity, she conveyed, “For you, I can make one thali because that much food is left. I won’t let you go hungry.” Emphasising her dedication to kindness, she affirmed, “You can ask anyone, I don’t let anyone go hungry who comes to my shop.”
The vlogger, deeply moved by her gesture, captured this touching moment and shared the video on his Instagram page, where it quickly gained traction and touched the hearts of viewers.

This now-viral video has already amassed almost 82 million views so far. Many were impressed by the woman’s actions and compared her to a mother figure. Comments flooded in, with sentiments like, “Real definition of an innocent mother,” and “You are my mother.”
