Dog owners in Britain are concerned over the flesh-eating disease affecting their pet dogs. According to the experts, the disease does not spread to other infected dogs. The disease starts with lesions in the skin and attacks other parts of the body. As of now, there is no cure for Alabama rot.
According to Dr. Corinne Wigfall, a vet, “Alabama rot causes clots to form in small blood vessels. It starts as skin lesions and can tragically lead to kidney failure for some dogs. With cases of Alabama rot increasing in the UK, it’s crucial to be aware of the tell-tale signs. The disease can affect any dog, regardless of age or breed.”
The parasite for the disease is called cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV). Since 2012, it has recorded about 324 cases in the United Kingdom. According to Anderson Moores, dogs of any size, age, and breed can catch the virus and get affected. However, the chances of getting infected by other dogs are close to none.
Experts have shared their opinions on how to prevent this disease from happening. According to them, one should be very careful about where they walk their dogs. People should avoid walking their dogs in muddy wetlands, muddy environments, and humid places. Even checking the dog regularly can save them from getting the disease. As there is no cure for this disease, preventive measures can help a lot. Owners should always check for raised, circular sores or ulcers, as these are the primary symptoms.
The disease is called Alabama rot because it started in Alabama. According to studies, the infection is caused by E. coli bacteria.
Lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, increased urination, and, in rare cases, stiffness in the body are some of the other symptoms. If your dog is behaving differently, get them checked by your vet immediately.
For treatment, the owners are requested to visit the veterinarian as soon as possible. The doctor will collect blood and urine samples. Antibiotics can be suggested. If the doctor finds any kidney damage, which is a very common effect of the disease, he or she may use some intravenous fluids to treat and prevent further damage.
