One of the most important rules in the jungle between prey and predator is that there is only one chance- of hunting or protecting. If the predator fails to hunt, the prey escapes and if the prey fails to protect itself, it becomes a meal for the predator. But what if a prey walks into a lion’s den? Well, not a den, but a pride of lionesses resting. A video of a few wildebeest walking down a deserted trail ends up walking into a group of predators resting. Will the lionesses attack? Or will the wildebeest make it out alive?
Wildlife videos often take the internet by storm. Recently, Luke Hartley, a ranger, went for a walk and tracked a few lionesses in the Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal. While there, he saw a surprising sight. He witnessed a few wildebeest, (African antelopes with long tails) walking in the forest. However, some lionesses were resting a little ahead of the trail they were walking on. The wildebeest could not see the predators lying on the road right in front of them and they kept walking towards them. However, turns out not all the cats were on the road. As soon as they neared them, a few more lionesses emerged from the bushes, attacked one of the wildebeest, and killed it quickly.
If you look at the video carefully, you will see the predators’ tensed and crouching stance, ready to pounce. Since their fur blended with the sand perfectly, the wildebeest walked into the trap. While one of the wildebeest was caught and killed, the others scattered in panic and fled.
The clip has left many in awe and shock. A user wrote, “Classic ambush by the Pride, they have some excellent lionesses." Another commented, “ So well done. The first lion chased towards a second lion, the one that caught up with it when they came around the bush. Love to see the coordination!" One remarked, “These Lioness are the smartest I have ever seen such an amazing ambush." The clip has received more than 22 lakh views on YouTube.
