In numerous science fiction films or actual footage from space stations, you must have seen how astronauts float through the International Space Station instead of walking. It is an interesting sight to witness but have you ever wondered why it is so? Why do astronauts float in space? There is an easy solution to this query. Space has minimal gravitational pull. Because of gravity, we fall instead of staying in the air on Earth. Because there is very little gravity in space, we begin to float instead of falling. The lack of gravitational pull in space is what keeps the universe together or else all planets and stars will start falling into an endless void.

As we go higher from the earth’s surface, the effect of gravity decreases. When there is microgravity, things or people appear to be weightless. When items and humans float in space, the consequences of microgravity are evident. There are additional methods to experience microgravity. The term “microgravity” describes a situation in which gravity appears to be extremely small because “micro-” implies “very small.” Astronauts can float both within their spaceship and outdoors during spacewalks in microgravity.

Every object is drawn towards every other object by gravity. Some believe that space is devoid of gravity. In actuality, there is a tiny amount of gravity in every place in space. The moon is kept in its orbit around Earth by gravity. Earth revolves around the sun due to gravity. It maintains the sun’s position within the Milky Way galaxy. On the other hand, gravity does weaken with distance. A spaceship may be able to travel far enough from Earth for its occupant to experience relatively little gravity. But on a spaceship in orbit, this is not the reason why objects float. At a height of 200 to 250 miles above Earth, the International Space Station circles the planet. Earth’s gravity is around 90% of what it is on the planet’s surface. Put another way, if a person weighing 100 pounds on Earth’s surface could ascend a ladder to the top of the space station, that person would weigh 90 pounds.
