Chinese immigrant Runing Lao’s experience of being the subject of a random attack by a drug addict outside a New York City restaurant has gone viral on social media. The attack happened outside a Chipotle last Wednesday.
Lao was randomly attacked by a drug addict outside the restaurant in Long Island City and she told the New York Post that she is so scared that she is scared to go to work.
“I was maybe five or 10 steps away from Chipotle … and this woman just started to beat me for no reason,” the 30-year-old woman who’s employed in the real estate sector said.
“And then I instantly started yelling, ‘Help me!’ I felt really shocked,” she said, explaining that she was unable to understand what was going on at the instant.
The attacker has been identified as Adriana Garcia, a 34-year-old resident of Queens. She first seized Lao’s umbrella and then beat her with it, leading her to bleed due to injuries caused to her head and face.
“The umbrella is not super strong, but that kind of surprised me,” she said.
She would have been assaulted more had a good samaritan not stepped in to save her. Jerome David, an emergency management worker, jumped in and reacted.
He pushed her against the wall and held her hands but at one point Garcia was able to break free from the hold and flee but she was pinned down on the road until the cops came.
Garcia meanwhile attacked the 56-year-old man who came to help Lao who was taken to a hospital to be treated of her injuries.
“At first I thought it was a prank — like that ‘Punk’d’ show they do. But when I saw her break the umbrella and hit her in the face, with blood gushing down, I was like, ‘Wow, what the?’” he said.
She was charged with two counts of assault by a New York court. The report by the New York-based paper said that Garcia earlier this year slashed someone in the face with a razor blade during an argument over some crack cocaine.
She is due to be produced in court on July 29 and a judge set bail at $5,000 cash/bond at her July 18 arraignment.
