Nice Truck Attack: What We Know, And What We Don't
A truck rammed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French Riviera city of Nice on Thursday night, killing at least 84 people in an apparent terrorist attack in which the driver also opened fire on revelers before being shot dead by police.

France suffered its third large-scale terror attack in 18 months, after a man drove a truck through a large crowd in the southern French city of Nice, killing more than 80 people on Thursday night.

France has declared three days of national mourning, starting on Saturday, and a state of emergency that had been due to expire on July 26 was extended for three months.

What We Know

The attack happened on Bastille Day - France's national holiday in memory of storming of the Bastille prison.

The truck driver involved in the attack was shot dead by the police. He was identified as a 31-year-old French-Tunisian.

The truck ploughed through Bastille Day revellers at Nice for about 2 kms.

Eyewitnesses said the truck zigzagged along the road and kerb - the intention clearly to kill as many people as possible.

CNN-affiliate BFM reported that the guns and grenades found in the truck were fake.

CNN quoted unnamed police sources as saying the attacker was known to police for petty crime, but "was not on the radar" for terror links.

French president Francois Hollande said, "We cannot deny that it was a terrorist attack."

What We Don't Know

It was not initially clear if he was acting alone or whether he was linked to any terror organisation

Whether intelligence and security agencies in France had received any alerts.

Whether French government was really prepared to tackle terror threat, especially in places outside Paris.

What's your reaction?
