The drones sent from Turkey to locate the wreckage of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s crashed chopper drew a crescent and a star using its flight map after locating the chopper and as it returned to its base. The crescent and star is reminiscent of the crescent and star seen on the Turkish flag.
The drones, manufactured by Akinci – a drone company owned by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law – found the crashed helicopter early in the morning in north-west Iran.
The Turkish state-run news agency, Anadolu Ajansı, said several hundreds of thousands of people watched the route of the drone live on FlightRadar24 application. It then released the drawing on its social media handles.
The AKINCI01 drone, identified by its call sign, detected heat signatures while hovering over the crash site early this morning. Initially spotted near Makaou, Iran, the drone was last tracked near Van, Turkey.
A massive search and rescue operation started Sunday afternoon when two other helicopters in Raisi’s convoy lost contact with his aircraft amid harsh weather conditions in the mountainous region.
State TV early Monday broke the news of his death, saying “the servant of the Iranian nation, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, has achieved the highest level of martyrdom”, showing pictures of him as a voice recited the Quran.
Killed alongside the Iranian president were Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, members of the provincial authorities of East Azerbaijan and his security team.
Iran’s military chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri on Monday ordered a probe into the cause of the crash.
Turkey has focused on drone production for over a decade and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law’s company, Akinci, is a leading brand.
Bayraktar, the manufacturer of the Akinci drone, asserts that it can perform operations typically carried out by fighter jets. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat operations. It boasts a 24-hour airtime and can reach altitudes up to 40,000 feet.
It can also operate independently of GPS as it is equipped with an internal sensor fusion navigation system.
