New Delhi: In another sign of churn happening within Pakistan over the Uri attacks and India’s retaliatory surgical strikes, a sitting Parliamentarian from the party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tore into the “deep state” demanding action against non-state actors like Lashkar-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Saeed.
“Which eggs is Hafiz Saeed laying for us that we are nurturing him?” PML-N lawmaker Rana Muhammad Afzal asked during a meeting the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of Pakistan’s National Assembly, BBC Urdu reported.
Speaking during the standing committee meet on Thursday that was centered on discouraging non-state actors, he also said: “Efficacy of our foreign policy speaks for itself when we couldn’t curtail Hafiz Saeed.”
“India has made such a case about the JuD (Jamaat-ud-Daawa, another name of LeT) chief that during the meeting on Kashmir, foreign delegates mention him (Hafiz Saeed) as the bone of contention between Pakistan and India,” he added.
Rana recalled a recent trip to France in which he had been tasked to explain the situation in Kashmir and said that Hafiz Saeed was brought up time and again. The lawmaker said that although he had rarely heard about Hafiz Saeed during his 25 years in politics, but he was a notorious character in international circles. He questioned whether Hafiz Saeed was good or bad for the Kashmir cause.
Rana said that although the government's stance on Kashmir is correct, banned outfits were a source of embarrassment for the country.
