After nearly seven months since returning, CM Punk has finally commented on whether he had any major concerns after signing a new contract with WWE. The Chicago-based wrestling star left the company in 2014 after a fallout with Vincent McMahon. Nearly a decade later, Punk made his return during the 2023 Survivor Series.
Speaking in a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Punk stated that he was a little worried if fans would still remember him after returning. “I’m not sure I had a whole lot of concerns outside, ‘Are the people going to remember me?’ And that sounds ridiculous but as somebody who’s in the public spotlight constantly, I think that’s just one of those things," Punk said in the interview on YouTube.
Speaking further in the interview, Punk also talked about how he knew that his return was going to be a big deal. However, the multi-time WWE Champion had no idea the reception would be so massive. “As a performer, you always have that voice in the back of your head that’s like, ‘Are they going to remember, is this going to be a thing?’ and it wound up being – I knew it was going to be a big deal. It wound up being I think way bigger of a deal than any of us realized," Punk concluded.
Punk further revealed that McMahon’s departure from the WWE was a driving factor in his return to the company. He had important conversations with WWE President Nick Khan and Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque in 2022 over the comeback. “Vince being out of the picture, I think, probably illuminated the way. I think that might have been one of the biggest things…" he said.
While Punk shocked the world with a blockbuster return to the WWE, he didn’t have the brightest of starts. He competed at the 2024 Royal Rumble premium live event, emerging as one of the final two in the men’s battle royal. However, the Second City Saint was eventually eliminated by Cody Rhodes who went on to finish his story by beating Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship at WrestleMania 40.
As of now, Punk is currently set to face Drew McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam 2024. Ex-World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins has been designated as the guest referee in the said match to ensure a fitting end to the enraging feud between Punk and McIntyre.
