ABS, Airbags, and More: What's New in Motorcycle Safety Gear
Here's a look at some of the new safety gear lined up for this season.

Safety is paramount in the world of motorcycles and scooters. As well as upgrading helmets, accessories-makers aren't short of ideas when it comes to designing new, high-tech products to keep riders better protected. Here's a look at some of the new safety gear lined up for this season.

ABS as standard

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) or combined braking systems are now obligatory in certain countries for some motorcycle classes. ABS has become an increasingly popular option among motorcycle buyers and now comes as standard on the majority of models. Some brands, such as BMW and Honda, have already equipped their entire ranges with ABS, and prices aren't expected to rise as a result.

The airbag

Although this kind of protection isn't yet widespread in the world of two-wheelers, airbag technology is quickly gaining ground. Wearable airbags are available in the form of a vest that's worn over a jacket, or they can be built directly into jackets themselves. For 2016, several brands have launched models that improve the technology and take the sector forward, moving away from models that have to be wired to the bike. Reaction and inflation times have improved too. Motorcycle airbags protect the rider's neck, back, chest and collar bones.

Dainese D-air Street: This Italian brand's wearable airbag is a reference in the field. It's available as a vest (€1,298 or approx. $1,466) or a jacket (€1,599 or approx. $1,806) and comes with a set of sensors to mount on the bike.

Gilet Bering: A key competitor for Dainese, this French brand has a highly technical solution offering comprehensive protection in key areas. The vest also has the advantage of being comfortable to wear. From €899 (approx. $1015).

Alpinestars: Tech-Air technology was tested by MotoGP racers and on the road before going on sale to the general public, which speaks volumes about its quality. The Alpinestars Tech-Air vest costs €95 (approx. $107) and is matched with the Valparaiso winter jacket (€649.95 or approx. $733.60) or the Viper spring/summer jacket (from €349.95 or approx. $395).
