As technology started taking over the country, a lot of car manufacturers began experimenting with new features in cars, trying to eliminate the physical appearance of drivers. After seeing the rapid growth in the segment on the tech front, Union Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed his strong objection to this particular feature.
As per the details shared by HT, the minister said he will not allow driverless cars in India. He pointed out that if self-driving cars came into the country, more than 80 lakh drivers would become unemployed.
Here’s What Nitin Gadkari Says About Idea
According to HT, the remark has been made by Gadkari, who is taking care of the Road Transport and Highways segment, at an event hosted by IIM Nagpur. While addressing the gathering, he recalled his statement saying “I said in the US itself that I will not allow driverless cars in India at any cost. This is because, in our country, a large number of people work as drivers….driverless cars will, therefore, snatch their jobs,” said Gadkari, quoted by HT.
‘Not Suitable for India’
In addition, he continued saying that such technology with cars is suitable for countries, which have lower or small populations. However, such ideas might not benefit the countries like India, which has a bigger population. It will become another issue if the technology lands here in India, says the transport minister.
This is not the first time the ministers have shown concern over self-driving vehicle technology. He was seen a few times speaking against the idea, citing the above-mentioned reasons.
