The whole idea of competing man with a machine has excited the humankind for decades now. Man has always found a way to deem himself superior of his own creations – the machines. But there are other living beings, more capable than humans in their respective traits. Take for example, a Cheetah. The fastest animal in the world is known for its top speed exceeding 110 kmph and a 0-100 kmph sprint in just 3 seconds, much like a race car.
Yes, a race car is what can be compared to the lightning speed of a Cheetah. To promote the upcoming FIA Formula E all-electric race series, a Formula E car was pitted against a living Cheetah, to find who is faster. Formula E driver Jean-Éric Vergne was behind the wheel for a speed test against a cheetah in South Africa.
Formula E cars are the counterpart of immensely popular Formula 1 motor sports. While F1 attracts a lot of crowd, Formula E is struggling to create a name of itself, one reason being, the electric car is not as aural as the F1 car. But the notion is changing rapidly and this video was shot as part of the promotional campaign for the series.
While the Cheetah was quick enough in the start, Vergne quickly ate up the distance, and took his Spark-Renault SRT_01E to the victory with only an inch remaining. The film was also shot to raise awareness of the threat of climate change to wildlife ahead of next week's UN Environment Assembly.
Only 7100 Cheetahs are remaining in the world, after losing 91% of their habitat in Africa and Asia. Formula E is an all-electric racing series promoting climate change. Vergne raced for Formula E team Techeetah and finished fifth in last year's championship.
It’s not the first time a man has raced a cheetah. In 2007, South African rugby player Bryan Habana also went down head-to-head with a cheetah.
