Skoda Vision X Concept to Debut at 2018 Geneva Motor Show

After the successful introduction into the market of the hybrid-only Kia Niro SUV, it was only going to be a matter of time until other manufacturers started to follow Kia's lead, and Skoda could be one of the next to get into the game with its own hybrid SUV crossover. Although it's currently only a concept, the Skoda Vision X will make its global debut at the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The Czech motor manufacturer is saying the Vision X is a "hybrid study by Skoda [that] advances the brand's SUV design language," but it looks like this is close to being a production-ready new model designed to make the brand a player in the increasingly important hybrid crossover segment.

The drawings of the Vision X that Skoda has revealed as a teaser for the full reveal next month in Geneva show a very sleek, stylish and exciting design. If an eventual production model arrives at some point in the not-too-distant future looking close to what we're being shown so far, this is a model buyers will likely choose regardless of what's under the hood.

If the Vision X does go beyond the concept stage, which it most likely will, it will become the third crossover in the Skoda range alongside the larger Kodiaq and the compact Karoq. The double headlamp arrangement we see in the renderings will be used for more Skoda models as time goes by, but the pop-up door handles (along similar lines to those already on the Range Rover Velar) are likely to be a casualty of economics when it comes to a production version.

There's no word yet on what kind of hybrid system will power the Vision X, but it is well-known the company is looking to expand its range of models in the fast-growing hybrid SUV segment as part of its Strategy 2025 program. By 2025, Skoda intends to have brought out a number of plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as some all-electric cars. And by that point, every fourth vehicle the brand puts out worldwide will be offered with either a plug-in hybrid or all-electric powertrain, or perhaps even both.
