Parupalli Kashyap Eyes Retirement With Sights Set on Coaching Kidambi Srikanth and India's Next Gen
Parupalli Kashyap plans to retire and is in the coaches' corner for Kidambi Srikanth at the Malaysian Open.

Parupalli Kashyap is expected to call time on his career and post retirement will be looking to turn to coaching. The 37-year-old was behind Kidambi Srikanth in the coaches’ corner at the Malaysian Open.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Kashyap divuldged his future plans.

“The injuries are forcing me to quit though I haven’t officially announced retirement. Meantime I wanted to start working with Gopi (Pullela Gopichand) sir because it would be foolish not to learn from his experience. I started with a batch of u17 and u19s for a month, and he gave me freedom to coach whoever I wanted to. Then Srikanth approached me to help him, and I’m thankful to Gopi Sir for giving me the opportunity to work with Srikanth,” Kashyap said.

Kashyap was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2012, having made history when he reached the men’s singles quarter-finals at the London Olympics, the first male Indian player to do so. Two years later, at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Kashyap clinched gold.

In recent times, Kashyap reached the final of 2019 Canada Open, having bagged multiple BWF and Grand Prix titles throughout his career.

Even through all this time, he was at the sdie of his now-wife Saina Nehwal.

“My thoughts are clear – we have to produce more champions,” he said, when asked about his coaching aim, adding, “But it is all up to the players. They have to execute.”
