Both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam are enjoying a blissful period in their career. While Kamal Haasan delivered a blockbuster with Vikram, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan films received critical acclaim from all quarters. This is why people are intrigued with the news that the two stalwarts of Tamil cinema are uniting for a project. It will be a grand reunion as they have not done a film together since the 1987 film Nayagan, which was India’s official entry to the Oscars that year. Their reunion project, which is tentatively being called KH234, is expected to recreate the same magic.
The leading woman of KH234 has also been the subject of considerable speculation. There were unconfirmed reports that Mani Ratnam was considering Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha. The most recent information is that Jawan actress Nayanthara has been cast in the role of the leading lady. Since no official confirmation has been made, we will have to wait a bit longer, reportedly till November 7 for an official confirmation.
Nayanthara is also fresh off the huge success of Jawan at present and there were reports that she had decided to not do any more Bollywood films for the time being. There are also reports that she is taking a break from Telugu cinema and hence she can give her entire time to KH234.
Interestingly, a collaboration between Nayanthara and Mani Ratnam could have happened years earlier. Nayanthara was Mani Ratnam’s top pick to play the sister of Vikram in the film Ravanan. The role was ultimately played by Priyamani. If Nayanthara’s part is confirmed in KH234, this will also be the first time Kamal Haasan will be seen alongside the actress.
On behalf of Raaj Kamal International Films and Madras Talkies, Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, R Mahendran and Siva Ananthi are co-producing KH234. Udhayanidhi Stalin is presenting the film on behalf of Red Giant Films. Mani Ratnam’s frequent collaborator AR Rahman will return to score the film’s music.
