When he was trying his best to act in plays, he had to perform many odd jobs.

Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddique is considered as one of the finest performers in Hindi cinema. He is among the top method actors who include the likes of Manoj Bajpai and Pankaj Tripathi. With over 100 films to his credit, Nawazuddin may be at the top of his game today, but his beginnings were extremely humble. Having no connection to films whatsoever and belonging from a lower middle class rural zamindari family, his journey to carving a niche for himself in Hindi cinema is inspiring. Having spent most of his young days in Uttarakhand, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar After graduating, he was employed as a chemist for some time before the acting bug bit him after watching a play.

Nawazuddin Siddique enrolled in the National School of Drama. The NSD had a criterion of having its candidates appear in at least 10 plays to grant admission. During that time, when he was trying his best to act in plays, he had to perform many odd jobs. In an interview with BBC, Nawazuddin said that he even had to sweep the floor of the stage and serve tea to the people during this time. He was determined to act in 10 plays and ultimately got admission into NSD.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui went to Mumbai after passing from NSD and a new era of struggle began. Initially, his ordinary looks as well as his frail frame caused him to get rejected from various productions. Initially, he did a few blink-and-miss roles in big and successful films like Shool, Sarfarosh and Munnabhai MBBS. These small roles did not help his career much although the movies were blockbusters.

The first time that the commercial audience got a taste of his talent was in Kahaani where he played a police officer. In spite of being a supporting role, he dominated the scenes with his no-nonsense persona. The same year, he appeared in the two-part Gangs of Wasseypur in the lead role and he has not needed to look back since.
