80 West Bengal youths join Tata's Singur Plant
311 other Singur individuals undergoing training at various IITs to join Tata plant.

Mumbai: Tata Motors on Wednesday inducted a batch of 80 youths as apprentices at the Singur People's Car plant, as per the MoU signed between Tata Motors, West Bengal's Department of Technical Education & Training and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation.

This batch comprises youths from Singur villages who had earlier registered with the WBIDC. The youth have undergone either a six-month or a nine-month training programme at the ITI Howrah Homes, ITI Hooghly, ATI Dasnagar and the Ramakrishna Shilpa Mandir, Howrah.

After completing their respective programmes, they took a trade test conducted by the West Bengal Government's DTET. The successful candidates were selected as apprentices and will now undergo 15 months' hands-on training at Tata Motors facilities to make them multi-skilled.

On successful completion of this 15-month programme, the trainees will take the trade tests to qualify for trade certificates issued by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and will become eligible for employment at the Singur plant and vendor facilities. In addition to the 60 Singur youth, 20 youth from various ITIs of West Bengal, selected from the campus by Tata Motors, have also been inducted.

Tata Motors had already appointed the first batch of 16 local youths, educated in state-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) as employees at the Singur plant from October 2007. They have been given intense training at Tata Motors' plants in Jamshedpur and Pune since March 2007.

Another group of 311 individuals, all from Singur villages, are now undergoing either a six-month or a nine-month training programme since May 2007, at the ITI Howrah Homes, ITI Hooghly, ATI Dasnagar and the Ramakrishna Shilpa Mandir, Howrah.

After completing their respective programme, they will undertake the DTET trade test and successful candidates will then undergo 15 months' hands-on training at Tata Motors facilities to make them multi-skilled.

This initiative is part of Tata Motors' comprehensive community development programme for Singur in line with the company's practices in other locations.
