Eid al-Fitr bank holiday in India

The start of Eid al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the beginning of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. As lunar months generally last between 29 to 30 days, Muslims usually wait for confirmation of Eid’s date until the evening before its arrival.

Since the crescent moon wasn’t sighted in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Lucknow, Eid celebrations are scheduled for April 11th.

In Kerala, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir, Eid was celebrated today (April 10) as the crescent was sighted on April 9 in these states.
