Road Safety Week is an annual event dedicated to promoting awareness and ensuring a culture of safety on roads. It is important to navigate the streets cautiously and be aware of all the road safety one should keep in mind to prevent road accidents and be able to save lives. Generally, the first week of January, from January 1 to 7 is celebrated as the Road Safety Week.

Driverless software-driven autonomous cars have been made to reduce or prevent accidents on the road. But how exactly do these cars operate without a driver? Naveen is from Aruppukottai town located in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, India, and gives robotics training to school students here. He used a small robot car to explain how an automatic, driverless car works.

In an interview with News18, he explained that everything is about the software in this car. Just like Google Maps uses data of already taken routes to guide us on roads. Similarly, automated cars operate based on the route data. For this, at least thousands of data are used to identify a road, a hill, a tree, or a pothole. After this input is fed to the data system, the car will run properly.

He further explained, that suppose one wants to go from Virudhunagar to Aruppukottai, then the car needs to be driven at least one lakh times on this road to record all the necessary data. It will be only then that the car will reach Aruppukkottai from Virudhunagar without a drive. To prevent any accidents, the obstacles will already be a part of the data, like incoming vehicles, trees, and potholes among other things, only then the car will automatically move away from any obstacle. These automatic cars will be used to transport goods from big factories to warehouses and other places.

Road Safety Week promotes awareness about traffic rules to prevent road accidents. Every year there are specific themes designed to address a few important issues and challenges to promote safer road practices. This year, the theme was automated cars, also referred to as driverless cars.
