Abhishek Sharma received his maiden call-up to the Indian men’s national cricket team for the tour of Zimbabwe after the 23-year-old lit up the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 484 runs at a striker rate of 204.22.

He reached Harare on Tuesday, along with the Indian cricket team team led by skipper Shubman Gill and with National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman as coach.

India will play their opening match against the Sikandar Raza-captained side on July 6 at the Harare Cricket Ground. The remaining four games will also be played at the same venue. The series will conclude on July 14.

Speaking to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Abhishek Sharma revealed that he watched Rohit Sharma and Co. lift the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados with none other than Yuvraj Singh.

“I was watching the match with one and only Yuvi paji because. When India won, he got really emotional and it inspired him because we all dream of winning the World Cup. He has won several ICC trophies for India and then watching him get emotional is a moment I will never forget. I think this World Cup was very special and it has inspired me to win a World Cup for India,” he said in a video posted by BCCI on social media.

Apart from Abhishek Sharma, five other players will be looking to make their India T20I debut – Riyan Parag, Tushar Deshpande and Harshit Rana, with Dhruv Jurel and Sai Sudharsan having played for India in Tests and ODIs respectively.
