11 years in the making, heartbreaks galore, and then relief and jubilation at last. India’s seemingly never-ending drought finally came to an end, as the Indian team clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy on Saturday with a 7-run win over South Africa.
After his initial triumph as a 20-year-old in 2007, Rohit Sharma once again lifted the T20 World Cup trophy, this time as skipper, and brought a World Cup back to India after 2011.
Rohit Sharma’s career has been nothing short of the stuff of dreams for all, and the Indian skipper staked his claim, stating that his triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup as captain was the ‘greatest’ moment of his career so far.

India were involved in a thriller of a match against the mighty Proteas, both undefeated teams in the tournament, as the Virat Kohli-anchored batting order put up a historic total of 176 in their outing, the highest total set in an ICC T20 World Cup Final.
Kohli, who had been struggling in the tournament with the bat so far, led the way with a clinical and calculated 76 runs off 59 balls, helping his side steer clear of imminent danger and to steady the ship for the eventual mammoth total.
After that, it was time for India’s finest with the ball to shine. And shine they did, when the moment called for it, as the likes of Hardik Pandya and the ever-imminent Jasprit Bumrah delivered a masterclass in death bowling to seal a nail-biting 7-run win over the Proteas, to clinch the coveted T20 WC trophy.
“The message was to everyone that let everything out, put whatever you have in your body, mind, put it in front of us and let’s see then what happens,” quoted Rohit when asked about holding his nerve in the final stages of the thrilling game.
“I thought the belief that everyone had till the last ball was bowled was to keep fighting. We wanted to fight, we wanted to fight and then eventually we managed to cross the line.”
But, with triumph came the news of the end of an era, as the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja all announced their retirement from the shorter format of cricket for India, to help usher in a newer younger age of Indian cricketers to take over the mantle and retain the glory they have achieved.
