Sri Lanka have pulled off a commanding start to the ongoing T20I home series against Afghanistan. They will aim to take an unassailable lead in the three-match series by winning the second T20I, which will be played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on February 19. The opening T20I was mostly dominated by the bowlers. Afghanistan won the toss and sent their opponents to bat first. Despite a poor show from the top-order batters, Sri Lanka were able to set a worth-fighting target of 160 runs.
After the hosts lost four early wickets, captain Wanindu Hasaranga took over the charge. The Sri Lankan all-rounder went all guns blazing during his 32-ball innings to score a blistering 64. With the Dambulla track assisting the fast bowlers, Afghan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi claimed a three-wicket haul, while Naveel ul Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai fetched two scalps each.
Sri Lanka also took advantage of the bowling-friendly surface. With Matheesha Pathirana claiming a four-fer, the Afghanistan batting unit collapsed like a deck of cards. Apart from Ibrahim Zadran’s unbeaten 67, there was no significant contribution on the scoresheet as the visitors lost the match by four runs.
