The Indian cricket team landed at the Caribbean Islands for the second phase for the T20 World Cup 2024 – the Super 8s – after topping Group A with an unbeaten record in New York. Their final league fixture vs Canada in Lauderhill, Florida was washout due to rain and it will be a big change of conditions for the Indian team a they look to make the semi-final of this edition’s tournament.
The spicy drop-in wicket at Eisenhower Park at the Nassau County Stadium was quite tricky for India and the other teams, but at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados where India will play their first two Super 8s fixture, things might get a bit easier for the batters. This venue, throughout the tournament, has seen some high-scoring matches.
‘Pitch Kaisa Hain?’: Enquires Rohit Sharma During 1st Practice Session in the Caribbean
And Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is keen to start the second stage of the tournament on a good note. “There is real keenness in the group to go and do something special, so you know that’s a good way to start our second stage of the tournament. It clearly shows that everybody wants to make a difference and obviously we take our skill sessions quite seriously, there is something to achieve every skill session that you do,” Sharma told BCCI.TV on the sidelines of team’s first practice session at Barbados ahead of their first Super 8 fixture vs Afghanistan on June 20 (Thursday).
However, Sharma is also wary of the fact that the turnover time between games in not that much and they will have to be on the top of their games in three fixtures. After facing Afghanistan and Bangladesh (June 22) in Barbados, India will travel to St Lucia for their final Group 1 Super 8 match against Australia.
“Once you know we play our first game, we are playing the next two games in span of three or four days. So it’s going to be a little hectic, but again we are all geared up. We are used to all of this, we travel a lot, we play a lot, so that’s never going to be an excuse. We will look to focus a lot more on our skills and what we need to do as a team rather than all of this. Every session then really becomes very important and to make the best use of it. We have seen a lot of games here, we have played a lot of games here, so everyone understands what one needs to do to get the result in our favour. Everyone is looking forward and quite excited as well at the same time,” added Sharma.
