Virat Kohli Achieves Massive Milestone Despite Poor Run of Form in 2024; Join Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis in Elite List
Virat Kohli became only the fifth batter in cricket history to score over 12000 runs at home in international cricket (Tests/ODIs/T20Is).

Virat Kohli might have got out cheaply in both innings of the 1st Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, he started well in the second essay and also achieved a rare milestone.

When he reached the score of 6 runs in the Indian second innings, Virat Kohli became only the fifth batter in cricket history to score over 12000 runs at home in international cricket (Tests/ODIs/T20Is).

India vs Bangladesh 1st Test Day 2 LIVE

Sachin Tendulkar leads this tally with 14192 runs at home across formats in 258 matches, followed by Ricky Ponting (13117 in 249 matches), Jacques Kallis (12305 in 234) and Kumar Sangakarra (12043 in 235).

Kohli looked composed and was heading towards a big score but eventually, got trapped in front by Mehidy Hasan Miraz while batting on 17. The former India skipper looked to play the fuller delivery through the on-side but was rapped low on the front pad adjacent to the off-stump. After a brief discussion with Shubman Gill, he decided not to review the decision and walked off the field.

However, the TV replay left the Indian dugout stunned as a spike on the Ultraedge suggested a fine inside edge that Kohli didn’t realise.

Kohli Yet to Strike Big

Kohli’s return to Test cricket hasn’t been up to the mark. On Thursday, he was caught behind off Hasan Mahmud’s bowling and walked back after scoring just 6 runs. The right-arm quick sent him packing too with an innocuous delivery on which Kohli got an outside edge for another easy catch for Litton. He managed run-a-ball six.

On the second day, he appeared to be getting back to his rhythm but a misjudgement cost his wicket.

129 more needed for 9000 Test Runs

The ace Indian batter is now 129 runs short of becoming the only fourth Indian batter to score 9000 or more Test runs. He would join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar in the list of Indian batters who have achieved the remarkable feat.

Tendulkar, at 15,921, has the most Test runs for India with Dravid behind him at 13,265 runs and Gavaskar in third place with 10,122 Test runs.
