Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane missed out on a century by just three runs in the morning session of the Day 2 of Irani Cup 2024 currently underway in Lucknow. Resuming on his overnight total of 86, the India cricketer added 11 more runs before losing his wicket to Rest of India (RoI) fast bowler Yash Dayal.
As gritty as Rahane’s innings was, his dismissal was equally strange. A sharp bouncer from Dayal which was aimed at Rahane’s body saw the Mumbai skipper take an evasive action but his efforts were in vain as the ball brushed his glove before being pouched by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.

The RoI fielders let out a hopeful appeal but the on-field umpire turned it down before captain Ruturaj Gaikwad successfully reviewed it.

It was Rahane who first combined with Shreyas Iyer and then Sarfaraz Khan on Day 1 of the competition to revive Mumbai innings after they were jolted by early blows from Mukesh Kumar.
Mukesh got rid of Prithvi Shaw (4), Hardik Tamore (0) and Ayush Mhatre (19) in quick succession to leave Mumbai wobbling at 37/3 after RoI opted to field first at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
Rahane then dropped anchor and found solid support from Iyer with the duo adding 102 runs for the fourth wicket to lift Mumbai to 139/3 before being separated.
Iyer also fell to Dayal after scoring 57 off 84.
Sarfaraz, who was released from India’s Test squad in Kanpur for the Irani Cup, then joined forces with his captain to take the innings forward and the Ranji champions ended the day at 237/4.
While Rahane missed out on a hundred, Sarfaraz did complete his ton.
