Manchester: Tottenham Hotspur guaranteed a top-four finish in the Premier League when Peter Crouch struck late to earn a 1-0 win at Manchester City on Wednesday.
The match, dubbed a Champions League playoff, was a tense affair with City desperate for the win that would have made them favourites to claim fourth spot ahead of the final round of matches.
Striker Crouch's 82nd-minute header after a parry by keeper Marton Fulop put Tottenham four points clear of City and made sure they will compete in Europe's top club competition for the first time since 1962 whatever happens at relegated Burnley on Sunday.
City manager Roberto Mancini, brought in by the club's billionaire Arab owner at Christmas in place of Mark Hughes to spearhead the club's dream of becoming a major world power, have to content themselves with a place in the Europa League.
